The aim of this programme is to advocate for effective and gender sensitive credit policies and  programmes that address women's needs and are financially sustainable. This is addressed  through training and sensitisation of MFls in gender analysis and development of gendersensitive  financial products such as Kikalu. Kikalu is a Capital Asset loan credit product that was specially  designed to help women entrepreneurs with small enterprises acquire capital assets such as  machinery and buildings.

 Achievements
  Production of manuals
"Engendering Micro finance Services"Training and Facilitators’ Manual developed in close  participation and consultations with the micro finance practitioners was published in October 2001.  The manual is tailored to micro finance practices and is intended for sensitize MFI practitioners  and policy makers on how to integrate gender in micro finance services.

  Production of Business tips
These are user-friendly fliers on different aspects of business management. The tips are tailored  to the MFI clients and are easy to read.

Development of a Capital asset Loan
KIKALU Evaluation to establish the extent to which it meets the needs of clients as well as  ensuring financial sustainability of the MFIs revealed that the product had enabled clients  especially women to acquire “significant” assets such as buildings, land, cows, refrigerators,  popcorn machines etc that are essential for their economic empowerment. The product also  contributed to the MFIs’ financial sustainability in form of rapid multiplication of the rate of  portfolio growth; a means to retaining clients as well as attracting new ones; increased income  from interest rates and membership fees. For instance the product had contributed 14% to the  MFI’s/UMU’s total income up to April 2001.
Initiated a training Linkage programme between MFIs and Business Development Service  Providers in Luwero District 2004.

 Research Undertaken
CEEWA-U (1999) Baseline survey on MFI lending methodologies, institutional sustainability and  clients’ needs.

The study was funded by the Netherlands Organization for International Development  Cooperation (NOVIB) to assess the extent to which Micro finance Institutions, their  methodologies and products are able to become financially sustainable while meeting clients’  needs.

Improving Government of Uganda (Credit Program) Policies And Processes From a Gender  Perspective, 1998
Funded by Gender and Economic Reform in Africa (GERA), which seeks to enhance the ability of  African organisations to improve women’s access to economic decision making by facilitating  gender research. The objectives of the research were to:
Establish scope and implications of GOU (Credit Programs) Policies and Processes from a  gender perspective.
Analyze how the various policies and processes have impacted on access to financial services by  micro and small entrepreneurs (MSEs) especially women.
Create dialogue between policy makers, policy implementers and stake holders to enable a  participatory approach in the design of new policies and processes that are not only workable and  acceptable but also ensure that women’s needs are integrated at the design stage.
