After realising that while significant efforts were made by the government of Uganda and the Non  government organisations (NGOs) to disseminate information on a range of issues to promote  sustainable development for all, a lot still needs to be done. Most of this information particularly  relating to women’s’ economic empowerment is not readily accessible.

CEEWA-U therefore developed an ICT Project to bridge the information gap between information  sources, institutions with information and the end users. The Project facilitates linkages with the  women at the grass root level and assists in establishing the impact of government policies and  programmes and how the use and application of ICTs create an avenue for bridging the  information gap.

With support from International Development Research Centre (1999-2001), CEEWA-U was able  to mobilize women and pilot test the Project in three districts namely Mpigi, Wakiso and Kampala  in central Uganda. During this period CEEWA-U sensitised and created awareness among women  entrepreneurs about the role ICTs play in empowering and strengthening their ability to run and  manage their lives and businesses.

Currently with the support of Humanistic Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries  (Hivos), CEEWA - U has continued to implement the ICT project in six project districts/sites  namely Buwama sub county Mpigi district, Nabweru sub county Wakiso district, Nakawa division  Kampala district and Goma sub county Mukono district in central Uganda plus Budondo sub  county Jinja district and Bulamagi sub county Iganga district in Eastern Uganda.

The main objective of the project is to enable rural women entrepreneurs and women  organizations that promote enterprise development to explore ways and means of exploiting  ICTs for community economic empowerment.

Vision is a woman who is economically empowered and able to access and apply ICT’s to  promote her enterprise. The focus of the project is on building capacity of grass root women to  access and utilize ICTs for enterprise development.

The ICT Project is implemented under the Women and Entrepreneurship Development (WED)  Programme which has two sub components i.e. Women Information Resource Electronic Services  (WIRES) and the Empowerment Resource Centre.
